It’s an interesting question and, as we explored in this piece, the word ‘latex’ can be used by mattress manufacturers to market, what is effectively, spongey plastic. As ever with any big purchase decisions the old cliches often ring true - ‘pay your money and make your choice’ and ‘buy cheap spend twice’ are old adages which have never been truer when it comes to buying a latex or memory foam mattress. Here’s why:
Cheap mass-produced synthetic latex and foam mattresses
Cheaper memory foam mattresses will be made of low-quality material. They will lose their firmness and ‘memory’ i.e. retaining the shape of the sleeper quicker over time than their more expensive counterparts. Eventually, like a tired old spring mattress, this could lead to back and neck problems. Is a cheap latex mattress worth the money? In our opinion definitely not.
Higher-end synthetic latex and foam mattresses
Like pretty much anything you buy for your home when it comes to buying a latex mattress you can spend as little or as much as you want. Some come with cooling gels, thousands of pocket springs and some are even marketed as hypoallergenic. The higher-end latex mattresses often come with guarantees, however, we’re not sure that paying over £1,000 for something that is predominantly plastic-based is worth it, do you?
The natural latex difference
Snoozel Green only ever uses 100% grade A natural latex. This means the mattress you will spend a good proportion of your life lying on doesn’t contain any synthetic materials and definitely no plastics. You can read all about the benefits of natural latex here but in brief, it’s more durable (can last up to 20 years), it’s genuinely hypoallergenic and non-toxic, so better for you and also better for the environment. The natural latex we use comes from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved groves in Sri Lanka. No chemical stabilisers are used during this process which means that no odours are off-gassed (unlike the synthetic alternatives).
Don’t just take our word for it
When we started the Snoozel Green journey we knew that our customers would be at the heart of what we did. The feedback we have received has been nothing short of amazing. What was most striking for us was to read the reviews from customers who had bought a synthetic latex mattress in the past but wanted to sleep naturally. What also struck us was the number of people who mentioned they no longer slept hot and generally slept better.
So are latex mattresses worth the money?
Latex or memory foam mattresses are generally considered to last longer and be better for side sleepers and sufferers of back pain. But, and here’s the thing, not all latex mattresses are created equally and natural latex will last longer, are better for your body and the environment. So if you want to see the difference that sleeping naturally can bring, you can try the Snoozel Green mattress, risk-free with our 101-night trial and a five-year guarantee.
